Five 2008 East Football Players Make All-Ohio Team

Five players from the 2008 SOC I Championship Team make All-Ohio recognition! Three seniors and two juniors are honored with these selections! All three seniors that were selected made the state team last season as well; Chase Mault, Bryan Hoover and Jacob Howard. But, one returned to receive first team honors for two years in a row; Linebacker, Chase Mault! Now, the reason that I feel this is worth mentioning is this. This is the first time in East football history that a player has made the first team two years in a row in football! And, just maybe in any sport at East! So, history continues to be made for Tartan Football!

The two juniors who made the team are; Zach Rawlins and Jonathon Garrett! Both, are coming off remarkable seasons and are inticipated to have exceptional senior tours. If one could improve on an already impressive performances!

The Tartan All-Ohio Team Members are:

First Team Defense

Chase Mault - Linebacker

Second Team Offense

Bryan Hoover - Back

Second Team Defense

Jacob Howard - Lineman

Special Mention

Zach Rawlins
Jonathon Garrett

I also, would like to mention that the East Tartans were the only team in the SOC I that had players to make the 1st or 2nd Teams! Other teams in the SOC I made Special Mention!

Being selected to this team is a great honor to any player. Being selected means that the coaches in your conference recognize and vote on individual players; as stand out players within your conference! Players that made positive impacts in the games played within the SOC I Conference; players that made a good impression on other SOC I coaches!

A big congratulations to all of the players that made the team this year and way to represent our school on the gridiron! We are losing 6 SOC I All-Stars to graduation this year; but we are bringing back 5 players from this team that have gained great experience in the last couple of years! With that in mind... the Sciotoville community is looking forward to watching the 2009 Tartan Football Team; defend the SOC I Title once again! Let's Go Blue! Leave No Doubt!

The Axe N Shield - What Does It Stand For?

The Axe N Shield is primarily a Football exclusive logo! It was created by Stacey Bond, Jeff Dempsey and Eric Dingess. About 1:30 AM one night last year; right before two-a-days began; Stacey and myself, was sitting at my house and was talking about coming up with something new as a decal on the sides of the helmets. One thing lead to another and we were at Eric Dingess' house till about 3 or 4 in the morning; we explained to Eric what we wanted and all of a sudden; we got a new decal for the helmets that is sweeter than anything we have ever had before!

Before, we have had the script "East"; we've had the block "E"; we even had the Dallas Cowboy look-a-like "Star" on the sides of the helmets! We thought it was a great new symbol to put on the side of a helmet; nobody we played had anything as nice and cool as this! But, the real test that it was good and would be excepted would be to show it to the team and get their thoughts about it.

That afternoon, Coach Bond and I took it to practice with us and showed all of the players; they went nuts over it and it was official; it would be on the sides of the helmets in the 2007 Football Season! What the boys didn't know was that on the very first home game we were also going to place it in the center of the field!

When the news got out about the new logo for the Tartan football team it caught on like wildfire; it was a mania! Local newspapers came down and took pictures and ask questions about the new logo. It was certainly welcomed by many!

Eric Dingess donates his time every year to paint the Axe N Shield in the center of the field before every home game! He ever fails to come thru for the Tartans! Coach Bond and myself make sure that new decals are ordered every year in time for that first game to kick-off the season! Eric, Coach Bond and myself, are currently speaking with the school; about them accepting the logo as the official logo of the Tartan football team and, if so, the school will be the owner of the logo as long as they have it trademarked as the schools!

The logo also has alot of meanings and symbols in it! Below is what the Axe N Shield represents!

  • Four Cracks = Represents the other four teams in the SOC I Division.
  • Twelve Rivots = Stands for 11 players on the field; 12th stands for players on the sidelines or the fans in the stands.
  • Axe = Represents the "T" for Tartans.
  • Celtic "E" = Represents East.
  • Celtic Symbol on Axe Head = Is the symbol for brotherhood or unity.

So, as you can see, it's much more than just a logo; it's a symbol representing Tartan football! Hopefully, it is something that will be around for many, many seasons to come! And, I think it will be part of Tartan football forever now; because the script East, the block E; and the Dallas Star... never had such an impact or meaning to the team or fans; as the Axe N Shield has! THERE IS NO DOUBT!

Returning Players for the 2009 Tartan Football Team

Next season the Tartan gridiron team returns 9 seniors, 3 juniors and 10 sophmores from the 2008 SOC I Championship Team! Also, they recorded history with the first ever back-to-back state teams in school history. Some mighty big cleats to fill if you ask me! But, the good news is; every senior returning has had at least one year of experience playing at the varsity level and most have had two years experience!

The 2008 team allowed for the underclassmen to get some valuable playing time as well. Also, last season we had a JV schedule for the first time in I don't know how long. I know it's been at least 10 years since there was a JV schedule, so the young Tartan Army gained alot of experience from this schedule! Thanks Coach Hall.

Here is a list of the returning starters for the SOC I defending champions!
